Student Voice at Helenswood School

Student’s opinions are valued at Helenswood and they are encouraged to be involved in all aspects of life at school. Some of the routes used to develop Student voice are:

Students learn about the democratic process through an annual campaign and elections for the new Head Girl and her team.

The key aim is to build a strong sense of Community and responsibility for ones own actions.

Exciting new initiatives we want to develop are peer observers and researchers and having students represented on the Governing Body.

Year 9 Charity Concerts for Demelza House Children’s Hospice

Vicky Pickering from Demelza House Children’s Hospice, visited the school on Wednesday 30th June 2010 to be interviewed by Helenswood Radio students, and witness the fantastic Year 9 concert at lunchtime.  The concerts have so far raised close to £100 and 9JD made an incredible £42.50 by themselves.

The Year 9s embraced the whole project whole-heartedly, composing some really amazing songs.  They also learnt to play the bass, keyboards, and drums, which they incorporated into their performances.

Six students from 9JD will be invited to visit one of the hospices - they will report back on different aspects of Demelza's work with children and their families.

Hawaiian Day Raises Money for Sandown Primary School

As part of Helenswood School’s successful year of fundraising, students from Years 7 to 9 decided to support one of our local primary schools SANDOWN to help support the schools major refurbishment project.

Sandown are hoping to raise over £100,000 to improve their swimming pool facilities.

Many Helenswood students were pupils at Sandown, and so they were keen to support the school. Money was raised by holding an Hawaiian Mufti Day and selling cakes. Great fun was had by all and some interesting outfits were worn by staff and students!

Helenswood Head Girl Billie Kotting and Deputy Head Girl Isra Hussain with representatives from Year 8 tutor groups presented a cheque for £452.98 in assembly  to Sandown students -  Emily Melham and Sara Melvin.
