Students at Helenswood School

Lower School StudentsWe are proud to be part of the community of Helenswood School. Why? Our school is one which provides a good all-round education.

We love Performing Arts – in fact if we could have more of it we would! The Lower School has some really great facilities – our sports hall is a really fantastic place to learn. There are lots of extra curricular clubs we can take part in, and our Sports teams represent us both locally and nationally to great success.

Easter Revision Sessions

We are providing a whole range of subject revision sessions for GCSE and Federal Sixth examinations. These will run mainly on Thursday 15 and Friday 16 April 2010, with Dance running a revision session on Wednesday 14 April 2010. These sessions will be running on two sites – Helenswood Lower School for Dance, Helenswood Upper School for all others.

View the revision timetable below for full timings. Please note, in order to properly organise the sessions we need to know by the 19th of March which sessions your daughter would like to attend.

Year 9 Options Evening - Update

Your daughter has received the option booklet ’It’s Your Future 14+ February 2010’ (also available for download below), which I hope she has discussed with you.  At the school, via tutor periods, assemblies and an individual interview, following the return of a questionnaire, she has been given both general and individual advice regarding options.

While we aim to give every student their first choice, it is necessary to ask for a reserve subject as it is very unlikely that we will be 100% successful in matching students to the available space in classes.  Final option choices will be announced on Wednesday 31st March 2010.

Year 6 - Year 7 Transition Day

Helenswood School and the Hastings and St Leonard’s Excellence Cluster supported Y6 students who would be moving into Y7 in September 2009 with an exciting ‘Transition Summer School’.

Students attending had come from a number of our feeder primary schools, and a total of nine students enjoyed the two day course on 11th and 13th August 2009.

The first day was spent in school – getting to know one another and the school buildings. Students undertook three activities involving an input from Sussex Police on the ever popular ‘Super Sleuth’ course; a cooking session and an outside activities session. The second day was spent entirely at Knockhatch Activities Centre where excellent weather was met with a similar level of enthusiasm by all participants! At the Girls in a boat!same time as students enjoying the sunshine, Helenswood parents/carers were able to undertake an ‘online and proud’ computer literacy session run by our very own ICT Technician: Scott Ferrin.

All sessions proved to be very successful. The big question is though: has the transition summer school enabled the nine students to make a better start here at Helenswood? To enable us to answer this question the same students will be attending one further evaluation session at the Lower School site during half-term. By evaluating the project we can continue to ensure that all students who attend Helenswood have a really successful start – and then continue to grow in confidence and academic progress throughout their time with us.

School Menus

Lunch menus are planned in advance in 5 week blocks. Each day normally has 3 choices of main meal with at least one of these being a vegetarian option. Every effort goes into making these meals nutritious and balanced and they always help towards part of a childs 5-a-day diet. Certain themes exist, with Wednesday a traditional roast dinner and Friday's meal based around fish.

Alternatives to the main meal are always available in the form of jacket potatoes, sandwiches or a box of salad from the salad bar.

From time to time changes are made to the pre-planned menu and suitable substitutions are made accordingly.
