Science at Helenswood School

Key Stage 3 Science

KS3 ScienceAt Key Stage 3 students study a broad base of topics which cover aspects of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and a little Geology. These are taught in units of which there are 12 per year. As part of these units we aim to improve students cognitive, investigative and data handling skills through practical and enquiry based activities, and to raise awareness of the application and implication of Science in society today. Each topic comes with a small project based homework, which is available online through the Helenswood Learning Platform.

--------------------------- Year 9 UVR Project --------------------------

In Year 9 students have been doing a case study on the effects of sunlight on the human body. Students reseached the positive and negative aspects of exposure to the sun, and looked at finding the healthy balance necessary for a healthy lifestyle. Some students choose to present their findings in video form, so for the definitive guide to the effects of the sun, click the link below.

How the video was made

"Firstly we put our camera onto a tripod so that it wouldn't move when taking the photos for our stop animation video. We then took a picture of a blank piece of paper. Then we drew each letter of a word taking a picture after drawing each letter. We put all of our pictures onto a computer and imported them to Windows Movie Maker. On Windows Movie Maker we made each picture show for less than 1 second.

Once all the pictures were put together it looked like each letter was appearing on the page, one after the other. We then added music to finish our video off."
