After winning the local round, the squad progressed to represent Hastings at the East Sussex Triangular Final. An easy win over Dorothy Stringer put us in the final against old rivals Bishop Bell. The game was extremely close throughout, with both teams trading basket for basket. The game ended in a full-time draw. Overtime of 5 minutes was played and Helenswood pushed ahead to finally win by two baskets.
As East Sussex champions we were then drawn away against Ursline College in Margate, Kent. After taking an early lead and being fifteen points ahead at half time, we tired and allowed a very strong Kent back into the game. They ran out winners by 70-62. A special mention goes to Charlie London, who scored a massive 38 points in the game. Next year, as U15s, our aim is to reach the National Finals.
-------------------- Year 9 Netball County Finals ----------------------
Our year 9 team successfully won the Hastings and Rother netball tournament after winning against Filsham Valley, Claverham, St Richards and Battle Abbey. The team went on to represent Hastings at the County Finals tournament in Crawley and the results for Helenswood were as follows:
Group Round
St Wilfrids (Crawley) Won 8-2
Millais (Central Sussex) Won 4-2
Bishop Luffa (West Sussex) Won 6-3
Imberhorne (Mid Sussex) Lost 2-8
Dorothy Stringer (Brighton) Lost 2-8
Davison (West Sussex South) Won 6-3
Bishop Bell (South Downs) Won 10-0
After the group round we were in 3rd place which meant a re-match Semi-Final with Dorothy Stringer. We learnt from previous mistakes in the group matches and changed tactics. We aggressively blew them away with some awesome netball. Unfortunately Imberhorne were very strong due to a number of players who play regular club netball, and were too strong to beat. They went on to become well deserved champions.
Semi Final Vs Dorothy Stringer Won 6-2
Final Vs Imberhorne Lost 1-12
-------------------- Badminton National Champions! ------------------
Friday afternoon saw the departure of a rather tired-looking KS3 badminton team, ready for the National finals in Nottingham on Saturday 24th April 2010.
After being stuck in Cyprus, Hannah Hall returned to the UK in the early hours of Friday morning to join us on the 6 hour long trip to Nottingham.
Nine Schools from around England had made it to the National finals in Nottingham for the KS3 girls’ event. A record 1,695 Schools entered the National Schools competition back in October 2009 in the hope of making it to Center Parc’s for the finals.
The team, comprising a somewhat under-the-weather Marie White, Lydia Powell, Hannah Hall, Amber Lam and reserve Meranda Wilcox won their first game 5-0 against Dame Alice Owen’s School and their second match 5-0 against RGS Newcastle. They then went on to play the final round to battle for the title of ‘National Champions’.
Winning their first match in the final round 5-0 against Woodlands gave the girls confidence that they could go on to win the competition for the second year in a row. Their second match in the final round, against King Edward VI School from Warwickshire was their toughest yet…a nail biting round saw the score reach 2-2 prior to the last game. Hannah Hall and Marie White came though for Helenswood in the final game to win 21-16.
Throughout the competition the team moral was high and there was a strong belief from the girls that they were going to win. They went on to prove their beliefs to be true…Helenswood are National Champions again!
Well done girls, Helenswood School is very proud of you all!
------------ Professional Footballer Delivers Master Class ------------
Anthony Storey, former Middlesbrough FC player and current Tonbridge Angels Captain delivered an inspirational master class to a selection of year 7 and 8 students on Friday.
The Helenswood football squad were put through their paces as they learnt the importance of close ball control, hard work rate, self discipline and having the confidence to try new things.
Helenswood impressed with their attitude to learning and their response to coaching points from Storey. Having had a small number of our girls being highlighted by Brighton and Hove Albion FC as being talented individuals good enough to become a part of their Centre of Excellence, the master class has inspired them even more and hopefully enhanced their aspirations of playing at the highest level in the future.
Our thanks got to Anthony Storey and Richard Astle from All Star Soccer (www.allstarsoccer.biz)
---------------- Badminton Regional Finals – 25/02/10 ---------------
A 4-strong team of elite badminton players from Helenswood comprising Lydia Powell, Marie White, Amber Lam and Hannah Hall travelled to K2 sports centre in Crawley for the regional round of the Center Parcs National Schools’ Badminton competition.
The team were very obviously in a class of their own…they won all 25 games and all 5 matches that they played on the day, including the final against Hall Mead School from Essex.
The girls showed constant enthusiasm for the sport throughout the competition, conducted themselves well, and played with skill and precision.
The team will now go on to Nottingham Center Parcs on the 24th April to play for the chance to retain their title as National champions.
----- Brighton and Hove Albion FC Select Helenswood Students ----
6th February 2010
Helenswood would like to congratulate Chloe Campbell, Amy Sinden and Caitlyn Humbles on their Brighton and Hove Albion Girls Centre of Excellence selection. The girls have been invited to attend a two-week trial in Falmer to train with a squad coached by Brighton and Hove Albion FC coaches.
Further congratulations go to Amy and Chloe as they played their debut against Fulham FC on Saturday 6th February; one of the toughest games in the league of their age group. A fantastic achievement and a well deserved recognition of their talent.
----------- Regional Cup Finals Tournament - Millwall FC ------------
Monday 1st February 2010
Result: 3rd in the Region
Our under 13 6-a-side football team travelled to Milwall FC to compete in the Regional finals of the under 13 cup, and displayed some of the best football seen by their teachers so far. The squad of year 7s and 8s represented Brighton and Hove Albion in the blue and white stripes and put on a tough display to beat.
The fast astro-style surface was perfect for our girls, as they took players on in tight spaces, shot from various distances and passed the ball with one touch and two touch play. It was an absolute pleasure to watch from the sideline; much attention was drawn to the quality of our play. Our dream was to win and play at Wembley. After a longer journey than expected and with little preparation Helenswood won their first game 2-0, making a strong impression on all at the tournament. We played against all teams; Milwall, Gillingham, Charlton, Crystal Palace and Leyton Orient. Competing in a league against all teams we won two games, drew three and lost one, which unfortunately saw us finish 3rd, just one point away from making the final between 1st and 2nd place.
We were unlucky not to be in the final, but the girls represented Helenswood with the highest quality of football, making their teachers very proud. The squad: Chloe Church, Chloe Campbell, Poppy Edwardes, Jordan Hyland, Amy Sinden, Chloe Denny, Caitlyn Humbles.
---- Dreaming of Wembley; Helenswood make it one step closer ----
U13 Football, Thursday 28th January 2010
Helenswood put out 3 teams to compete in the Brighton and Hove Albion u13 Girls Community cup. With great determination one of our teams have made it through to the next stage by winning the 6-a-side tournament consisting of 15 school teams from the Sussex area. The group stage saw all three teams play four matches, with a healthy flow of goals across the groups. The competition was of an excellent standard and no team was seen to dominate. The chance to reach Wembley was there for the taking by anyone.
Helenswood set their sights high, and as expected the girls showed their skills, great team work, link-up play and a few goals to be proud of, particularly Poppy Edwarde's effort from a corner kick in the final that swung in to the top right hand corner! How did she manage that?!
The team who finally won it for Helenswood won all four of their group matches, achieved a win in the semi-final over Ratton and a win against Willingdon in the final. A victory that takes Helenswood to Milwall Lions FC on Monday 1st February to compete in the Regional Finals, with a dream of making it to Wembley.

------- East Sussex Schools Regional Trampoline Competition -------
Six students from Helenswood competed, in various age groups and at various levels, in the South East Schools Regional Trampoline competition on Sunday 6th December.
Daina Rose started the day with an impressive win in the U13 Elite girls section, followed by creditable performances from Hayley Burton and Tallulah McNeilly in the U15 Novice competition.
The U19 team of Eve Booth, Ellie Booth and Hannah Williams competed the day with an outstanding team victory in the U19 girls Elite competition. This was especially impressive considering this was the girls’ first time competing at Elite level.
The U19 team and Daina will go on to represent the South East Schools in London on 24th January 2010.
--------------------- Biathlon Competition 22/11/09 -------------------
Sunday 22nd November saw 10 students from all years compete in a regional Schools’ biathlon Competition in Gillingham.
Both pupils from year 7, Chloe Richardson and Tia Fuller, performed to the best of their abilities and finished in respectable 26th and 19th places respectively, out of the 37 competitors that were entered.
Year 8 students Amie Moran and Elisha Quinnell beat fierce opposition to finish 13th and 29th of the 40 competitors that competed in their age group.
The year 9 competition was a more gruelling affair as students Chloe Reed and Kerlena Stone battled through a 100m swim and 1,000m run. The girls finished in a good 13 and 14th places.
Swimmers Chloe Benton and Jessica Fitzwarren from year 10 put on a good show in both the swim and the run. Their battle left them in 8th and 6th places overall.
Star performer, April Johns, of year 12 showed her professionalism, finishing in 1st place in the 1,000m run which was performed in the pouring, cold rain. She followed it with a personal best time in the swim, finishing 4th overall. A truly excellent performance!
The day wouldn’t have been complete without the all-important teacher’s race. Miss Abbott represented Helenswood, giving the girls something to watch as she followed a GB biathlete round the running track and stormed to victory in the swim. Miss Abbott came away with a 3rd place trophy for the School.
A very commendable performance by all involved, congratulations girls!!

Thursday 5th November:
Seaford Head 0-5 Helenswood - National Cup 3rd Round
We travelled to Seaford Head expecting a tougher game than the previous round, and as expected we had a battle to start. All players worked hard and linked up play where they could; particularly between Amy Sinden and Caitlyn Humbles in the first half. As we settled in to the game and found our stride we broke through on numerous occasions and had a few shots. Amy Sinden broke the deadlock with our first goal, then suddenly we began to hit the target more often. Chloe Denny stepped up to take a free kick that we were awarded 25 yards out, and with a powerful strike, she hit the back of the net to our delight. Chloe scored again for us, and Amy took two more to make a hat-trick. The final score was 5-0 to Helenswood, putting us through to the 4th round of the National Cup, due to be played this month. Well done girls, keep battling.
Tuesday 10th November:
Helenswood 2-1 Willingdon - County Cup Quarter Final
Finally we had a home game to play! And with much support from many parents, staff and pupils we worked hard all the way through our quarter final to end up with a great result. Seaford were a tough team to play with some great players breaking through the defence on occasions. But our defence and midfield remained calm, worked well together, covered each other and swept up the loose balls. Tackles were being made all over the pitch and we battled hard to win the ball. With a wet surface, the ball flew through Seaford's defence on many occasions only for their goal keeper to make some great saves and protect the goal well. The score at half time was 1-0 to Willingdon after they scored a superb free kick from the edge of the area. Half time was tense. We battled hard all the way through the second half and Poppy Edwardes scored to keep us in the game. Helenswood's spirits were lifted and we carried on working, and with a few minutes to go Chloe Campbell clinched the game with a determined strike that ended up in the back of the net! A goal deserved by the whole team to win the game.
This puts us through to the Semi Final of the County Cup, due to be played this month.
------------ Chloe Church Wins British Judo Championships ----------
On Sunday, 11th October 2009 I went to Sheffield to compete in the British Championships for judo.
I left my house at 5.30am and arrived at Sheffield ice rink at 10am. I weighed in at 11am and was due to fight at 3.15, lucky for me though they were running ahead of schedule. This meant I was on my mat fighting at about 1.00 (I was really nervous now). I went down to the warm up mats until my name was called. When my name was called I went over to the mat that I was fighting on and prepared myself.
I won my first fight with a hold down (you have to hold them down on the floor for 25 seconds). I won my second fight with an ippon (an ippon is a 10 point score which means that if you get one you automatically win).
I won my third fight with a hold down again, but I lost my last fight, but because the girl that I had lost to got beaten by the other girls I ended up with the most points at the end.
Once everyone in all the weight groups had fought, everyone that got a medal had to parade around the mats.
The girls that had won medals were then presented with them. As soon as I got my medal I went to get changed and then looked forward to a 5 hour journey home.
I have now been selected to be on the pre-cadet England squad, which means lots more training and moving on to be a successful judo player. I look forward to the challenge ahead of me.

------------- Under 13's National Cup/County Cup Football -----------
The football season is well under way at Helenswood school for 2009/2010, and with a win at Cumberland School, London earlier on in the month, our under 13 team have made it through to the 3rd round of The National Cup competition. All players worked their socks off all game, and deserved their impressive 8-0 win. With a strong team spirit and a desire to go as far as possible in the competiton, our Under 13's are looking forward to their next National Cup game on November 5th against Seaford Head Community School. Players voted for their Player of the Match, and newcomer Caitlyn Humbles received the award; congratulations.
On Tuesday 20th October our Under 13's played the famous Tideway School in the County Cup competition, and once we settled and began to play some nice football, the girls had the goal securely in their sights, with a hat-trick from Amy Sinden contributing to our 9-0 win! A great result against a school known for success in football.

Under 15s National Cup Football - Helenswood 3-0 Maplesden Noakes
On Wednesday 23rd September our Under 15 football team played their first game of the National Cup competition where they faced Maplesden Noakes School from Kent. The team went out with a positive attitude and the will to enjoy the game. With the team briefed on their positional roles, it was down to them to try and dominate the game. They were successful, and attacking all the while. Maplesden didn't make it easy, but a goal from Lydia Powell gave us a 1-0 lead at half time. Fantastic!
The girls went out to play the second half eager to score some more, and with two more goals for Lydia Powell, her hat-trick wins the game! A great ending to a brilliant team effort. Our under 15 team were solid in their defence and with three substitutions made, it shows our depth in the talent.
Our Under 15s move in to the second round of the National cup competition, where we can hopefully perform as we did in the first round.

------------- Athletics brings more success to Helenswood ------------
Helenswood's athletics squads travelled to the K2 Centre in Crawley on Tuesday 12th May. With 25 of our girls receiving an inspirational pre-competition talk from Mrs Dallaway, we were raring to go. Our Junior team (year 7 and 8) began with the track events, with some top efforts made, particularly as the strong wind down the back straight called for every ounce of the athletes' determination. Meanwhile, our Intermediate girls (year 9 and 10) were pulling out some exceptional results and putting smiles on faces all round! A particular mention goes to Jaz Coleman throwing 27.38 meters in the Javelin (a new personal best), with Sian Bartholomew jumping great heights in the high jump, and finally to Jamilla Smikle who flew tremendously through the air in the long jump!
After lunch, it all changed round, where our Intermediate girls took to the track with Lauren Davey running a lighting time of 2 mins 38 sec in the 800m. Wow! Sally Wong must be commended for her 800m run also, really pushing herself to the limits for the good of the team. A valiant effort from all on the track. Our Junior girls were fighting for more points in the field events and Meranda Wilcox High jumped to the stars.
Despite the extremely windy conditions, our girls managed to win the Intermediate county competiton and our Junior team came second in their category! A fantastic result that now sees our Intermediate girls go through to compete in the regional finals, while our Junior girls could possibly have the chance to compete in the B finals of the Regional round.
Well done girls, bring on the Regionals!

------------------- Badminton National Champions --------------------
After a successful regional round of the Schools’ National Badminton Championships in February, our team of five Helenswood girls travelled up to Nottingham Center Parcs for the National finals. Their positive attitude all through the competition was certainly evident both when playing and when supporting their teammates. Although reserve Charlotte Wells didn’t get to play, she provided some great support to her team during the course of the competition.
---------------------- Badminton Regional Finals -----------------------
After winning the Sussex round of the Center Parcs Badminton Tournament, our team of 5 girls made it through to the regional round. Travelling to Haywards Heath, the team were confident that they would do well, and this showed throughout the day. In their first match, the team were very well motivated and won 105-23 in 5 games. The girls continued to play very well, showing great professionalism throughout the tournament, winning 105-46 and 105-27 in their final two matches.
Students Lydia Powell, Marie White, Louise Earey and Hannah Hall, our youngest player, all showed great maturity and played well together against the other teams, winning all of their games graciously. Reserve player Charlotte Wells enjoyed her two games, surprising us with some great shots at the opposition allowing us yet more wins.
The team left with their gold medals and heads held high looking forward to the national finals at Center Parcs in April.
Miss Abbott and Mrs Dallaway are thoroughly looking forward to taking the team up to the finals. The girls were a pleasure to take to the competitions and we are sure they will continue to be a credit to the school in Nottingham too.
Well done girls!! Good luck for the finals.
------------------------ Biathlon National Finals ------------------------
A team of 3 Helenswood athletes had an early start on Sunday 15th March. They were competing in the national final of the schools’ biathlon championships. Over 3,500 competitors from years 7 to 13 entered the competition back in November 2008, with only the top 600 athletes competing at the national final in Bath.
The 3-strong team comprising of April Johns, Samantha Doxford and Vicky Mann had a successful and enjoyable day at the event. The day started with a nervous wait followed by the 1,000m run. All 3 girls put in a great effort and ran with determination, enjoying the competition as well as the glorious sunshine. Vicky, who was drafted in at the last minute to replace Laura Bourne, sprinted her way to the finish line, quoting, “I could have gone faster!”
A long lunch-break meant that the girls could recover and impatiently await the swim! A quick warm-up and team-talk was all that was needed to ensure the girls were motivated and all set to do their 100m swim.
A real team effort by the Helenswood girls bagged them 6th place in the year 11 team event.
A superb competition and tremendous effort, well done girls!
------------------- Claverham Football Tournament -------------------
On Tuesday 10th March 2009, Helenswood took three teams to compete in the Claverham Football Tournament. We entered two U16 teams, who competed in two seperate pools and only the winner from each pool played in the final. After a lot of fun and enjoyment on a muddy pitch, both our U16 teams came third in their pool. The team spirit was great and there were moments of some beautiful football being played, with some top class finishes in to the net.
The U13s have yet another achievement to celebrate. They displayed a lot of hard work, high effort and great football, with one game resulting in a 9-0 win! The U13's went on to win their tournament and brought back another trophy to add to their medals won in recent competitions.
Well done girls, let's go for more!

Our Under 13 Football team travelled to Brighton on Friday to represent Helenswood in a football tournament that was run by Brighton and Hove Albion football club.
There were 8 teams in total and we played our first three matches in our group, but got off to a little bit of a slow start. However, after much determination and belief in ourselves, we started to shine and were given lots of compliments on the beautiful football that we played. We were tackling more, working together more and becoming a stronger team to beat. Chloe Campbell scored a goal in the group stage of the competition, where all score lines were very close.
We got to the quarter finals where we played Longhill School. We worked hard and drew 0-0. The game went to penalties, and our star goal keeper, Poppy Edwardes, made some exceptional saves to help us win the shoot out. The final score was 3-2 on penalties, after a real show of bravery from Marie White to step up and take a penalty when we needed an extra person to do the job.
So, we were through to the semi-finals, and next to beat was a team that we had previously played in the group stage. It was Beacon. We had lost to them in the last game, but we knew we were playing well and could beat them this time. After a strong performance from our defence, Jordan, Amy and Ashleigh, and a few shots from Chloe and Lydia that were almost scored, we drew the game again. We had to face another round of penalties! But we knew we had super Poppy, our keeper with reactions like a cat, to help protect our goal. Our strikers stepped up to take their penalties, and with every penalty scored, we were getting closer to the final. Poppy made a great save, then stepped up and scored her penalty to put Helenswood through to the final.
We met Dorothy Stringer, who had entered three teams into the tournament. We played so well, and Lydia Powell made some beautiful runs with the support of Chloe but the ball just wouldn’t go in the net! Finally, the chance came and Lydia put us 1-0 up! We were winning and the effort from Marie White really rubbed off on the rest of the team. We had the support of the boys from Hastings College cheering us on from the sideline and we hung on to our 1-0 lead with a fighting effort from every player in the team. The final whistle blew, we had won!
The team were presented with a well deserved trophy, a medal each and a ticket to watch Brighton and Hove Albion play at the Withdean Stadium.
On Wednesday 11th February we will be representing the region in a tournament in Millwall, South London.
Congratulations to all players in the team, football is up and coming!
Everyone is welcome to come along to football club with Miss Gardiner, whatever your level of play. The first aim is for everyone to enjoy it, and if you talk to people involved in the club I’m sure they will make you feel welcome and want you to come along.---------------------------- U15 Basketball ------------------------------
Helenswood 42 – 38 County Upper
28/01/09
Helenswood U15 Basketball team defeated County Upper (Bury St Edmunds) by 42-38. In a closely fought physical contest both teams found it difficult to score. Despite two major injuries the team remained focused and overpowered the tiring opposition in the final quarter.
Captain Carla Rudd had an outstanding game scoring 11 and controlling the offences from the start to finish. Supported by 12 points from Jazmine Coleman. A true team effort is rewarded with a semi final place v Aylesbury Grammar School (Buckinghamshire) on 9th February.
