--------- Badminton World Championships in Bulgaria 2010 ---------
On Tuesday 25th May 2010, Schools from fifteen countries travelled to Sofia, Bulgaria to compete in the ISF World Badminton Championships. A team of four Helenswood girls made up the England side after being selected to go when they won the National Schools’ Badminton Championships in Nottingham last year.
Wednesday 26th May saw the girls battling against a talented team of Chinese Taipei players at 9am. After having to forfeit one of the five games due to our youngest player, Hannah Hall, being four months too young to compete we lost the match 5-0. After lunch we played a tough set of games against Slovakia and won our third singles game with Louise Earey winning her games 21-16 and 22-20 against Ivana Laskova. Louise showed great determination and courtesy towards her opponent when playing, setting a good example to the rest of her younger team mates. For their final game of the day, starting at 8pm, the team were up against a very professional-looking team from Spain. The Spanish team train for two hours every day, proving them to have greater fitness and strength than our school team, but nevertheless our girls played well against them. The Spanish team graciously won 5-0 and at 10:30pm, at the end of a long hard day, England finished 4th in their box meaning that they would have to play for 9th place against Slovakia.
On Thursday 28th May, the team met with Slovakia on court again to play for 9th position. Yet again a score of 4-1 was reached with Louise winning her singles games for a second time. This meant that the girls would have to play against France for 11th place the following day.
The team’s final game saw a more positive attitude from the girls which paid off as they won 4-1 against the French. During their second game, Marie White was winning 18-3 when her opponent fell to the floor in agony as she tried to reach a well-placed shot. In true sporting spirit, Marie immediately ran under the net to check if the French girl was ok. She had sprained her ankle meaning that she couldn’t finish the game.
The team would like to thank Blind Design, Sovereign Commercial, Booker & Best, Magdalen and Lasher charity, and the Isabel Blackman foundation for sponsoring them to go to Bulgaria in order for them to play and represent England in this competition.
It has been a great experience for the girls to play against so many other countries and nationalities in the World Championships. They have not only come away from this experience in a respectable 11th place in the world, but have also been able to meet players from around the world to share stories, experiences and to exchange memorabilia from their country with.
Congratulations Helenswood, another sporting success to be proud of!

-------------------- Badminton National Champions! ------------------
Friday afternoon saw the departure of a rather tired-looking KS3 badminton team, ready for the National finals in Nottingham on Saturday 24th April 2010.
After being stuck in Cyprus, Hannah Hall returned to the UK in the early hours of Friday morning to join us on the 6 hour long trip to Nottingham.
Nine Schools from around England had made it to the National finals in Nottingham for the KS3 girls’ event. A record 1,695 Schools entered the National Schools competition back in October 2009 in the hope of making it to Center Parc’s for the finals.
The team, comprising a somewhat under-the-weather Marie White, Lydia Powell, Hannah Hall, Amber Lam and reserve Meranda Wilcox won their first game 5-0 against Dame Alice Owen’s School and their second match 5-0 against RGS Newcastle. They then went on to play the final round to battle for the title of ‘National Champions’.
Winning their first match in the final round 5-0 against Woodlands gave the girls confidence that they could go on to win the competition for the second year in a row. Their second match in the final round, against King Edward VI School from Warwickshire was their toughest yet…a nail biting round saw the score reach 2-2 prior to the last game. Hannah Hall and Marie White came though for Helenswood in the final game to win 21-16.
Throughout the competition the team moral was high and there was a strong belief from the girls that they were going to win. They went on to prove their beliefs to be true…Helenswood are National Champions again!
Well done girls, Helenswood School is very proud of you all!

County first team call for Lydia, 13
Published Date:

Badminton prodigy Lydia Powell has turned out for the Sussex senior first team at the tender age of 13.
Although she lost both her ladies' doubles matches, the call-up is further evidence of the Helenswood School student's rapid rise in the county game.
Lydia, who last year became the youngest player ever to represent Sussex at senior level and has since won seven caps for the second team, received the call for the match against a strong Hampshire II squad at The Westgate Centre on Sunday.
She performed well in both her games despite going down 22-20, 21-16 and 21-19, 22-20 as Sussex went down 12-3.
"From a potential point of view she's a wonderful talent," said Sussex County Badminton performance director Nick Chambers. "To play in the senior first team at that age puts her in very unique company."
It's believed only four players in the last 10 years have played for the Sussex senior front side at such a young age.
The previous day, Lydia triumphed in the ladies' doubles at the Norfolk U17 Badminton England competition in Norwich.
Lydia and regular doubles partner Anna Collis (Hertfordshire) finished top of a tough box before seeing off 16-year-old Norfolk duo Serena Verney and Holly Bowen 15-13, 14-16, 16-14 in the final.
She also reached the semi-finals of the ladies' singles where she was edged out 16-14, 15-13 by eventual winner Nicola Burgess (Buckinghamshire).
Ranked an under-15 gold player, Lydia trains twice a week at the Badminton England Performance Centre in Horsham, as well as at Helenswood, and the latest successes are reward for her dedication and commitment to the sport.
