English at Helenswood School
World Book Day 2010
World Book Day is the biggest annual celebration of books and reading in the UK and Ireland.
To celebrate World Book Day the girls took part in many literature related activities including; a tutor time quiz based on the teaching staff’s favourite childhood books, a book character fancy dress competition, a book mark design competition and a shortstory writing competition.![]()
In addition to the activities in school, pupils were given special £1 book tokens to pay for or towards a book of their choice.
If that wasn’t enough, a second-hand book sale in the library during lunchtime was organised by Mrs Kingwell in aid of Book Aid International and managed to raise over £40!
A massive thank you to all of you who took part and helped to make the day extra special, especially Mrs Kingwell in the Lower School Library and the English Department who dressed up as characters from Alice in Wonderland, truly inspirational!
The winner of the book character fancy dress competition was Alice Evans who dressed up as Arthur Dent from ‘Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy’.
We were surprised to get so many entries for the short story competition and after numerous discussions and arguments, the winners were decided.
The 1st prize winner of the short story writing competition was Ava Whitfield and the runners up with 2nd and 3rd place were Nikita-Louise Hoile and Gabriella Leonardi.
There will be another short story competition for girls to enter next term with prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place as usual.
Details will be posted on the English Department pages on both
The Learning Platform and the Helenswood school website.
Well done everyone!
Miss Elliott,
World Book Day Coordinator.
Key Stage 3 English
Within English at Key Stage 3 students are given the opportunity to access a creative, engaging and enjoyable curriculum. They will learn a broad range of skills within the three different elements: reading, writing and speaking & listening. We will equip them with the tools to develop their abilities in all three of these aspects of English, thus enabling them to become effective and successful communicators with their peers and within society.
Students will cover a broad range of topics each year including: poetry, creative writing, Shakespeare and media, alongside many more. All of these topics will be taught in an active and engaging way to enable students to develop and enhance their skills within the subject.
Students’ learning within English at KS3 will ensure they receive the best possible grounding in preparation for KS4 and beyond. We will enable them to become proficient in all aspects of communication ensuring they stand the best possible chance of succeeding within the wider world.
